Frequently asked questions
Safety files, RAMS and site compliance — answered.
Straight answers to the questions contractors in Johannesburg, Gauteng and Cape Town ask us most.
01What is a construction Health and Safety file, and do I need one?
Yes, if you do construction work. Construction Regulations 2014 (Regulation 7) require every contractor to keep a Health and Safety file on site. It holds your Health and Safety plan, risk assessments, method statements, legal appointments, training and medical certificates, and inspection registers, and it is audited by the principal contractor and the client’s safety agent.
02What do you need from me to build my safety file?
Your company registration details, your COID letter of good standing, the names and ID numbers of your employees, the details of your 16(1) and your supervisor, and the client’s Health and Safety specification and baseline risk assessment. You can send it all through our online Safety File Request form.
03How long does it take to get a safety file?
Once we have your company documents, employee list and the client’s specification, we build the file for your scope and confirm the delivery date with you when we quote. Files are built to be approved on the first audit, so work is not delayed.
04What are RAMS?
RAMS are Risk Assessments and Method Statements: the documents that describe how a specific job will be done safely, what can go wrong and how the risk is controlled. Most principal contractors require approved RAMS for every work package before work starts.
05What do contractors need to work on a Tier-III data centre site?
Approved RAMS for each work package, workers cleared on the owner’s contractor-management portal (ID, Annexure 3 medical, training certificates and appointments), background screening, and a site induction. We manage this for contractors on live Tier-III data centre sites in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
06Which scaffolding standard applies in South Africa?
SANS 10085-1:2026 (including Amendment 1), together with Construction Regulations 2014, Regulation 16. Scaffolds must be erected, inspected and supervised by competent, appointed people and inspected before use and after bad weather.
07Is your safety officer registered?
Yes. CMK Safety Solutions’ safety officer is registered with the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) as a Construction Health and Safety Officer.
08Can CMK be appointed as our safety officer or risk assessor?
Yes. We can be appointed on your safety file as safety officer, risk assessor, fall protection plan developer and incident investigator.
09Which areas do you cover?
Our head office is in Alberton, south of Johannesburg. We work across Johannesburg and Gauteng and in Cape Town and the Western Cape, and travel nationally for project work and training.
10Is your training accredited?
Our training courses are aligned to the relevant SAQA Unit Standards and accredited by the relevant SETA where applicable. Pricing is per day, so you can add as many delegates as the Unit Standard and SETA allow.
